AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)
AI Practitioner is AWS's foundational credential for AI and generative AI. It is not a machine-learning engineering exam: it tests whether you can reason about model selection, prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, and the governance questions that come with putting AI in front of customers. Applications of Foundation Models is the single largest domain at 28%, and responsible AI plus security together make up another 28%.

Who should take it
Anyone who needs to make or explain AI decisions without building the models — product managers, solutions architects, analysts, and developers adding AI features to existing systems. AWS suggests up to six months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS. No coding is required, and there are no prerequisites.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to be a data scientist or write code?
- No. It is deliberately non-engineering — no code, no maths. It tests whether you can choose and govern AI solutions sensibly. If you want the engineering depth, the Machine Learning specialty is the different exam.
- What score do I need to pass?
- 700 on a scaled range of 100–1000, with compensatory scoring — you pass overall, not per domain. The scale is not a straight percentage of questions correct, so treat practice percentages as an approximation.
- Is the real exam only multiple choice?
- No — and this is worth knowing before exam day. Alongside multiple choice and multiple response, AWS uses ordering items (arrange 3–5 steps, where order matters) and matching items (pair 3–7 prompts with responses). Our practice questions are multiple choice, so drill the ordering and matching formats separately.
- How is this different from the new Generative AI Developer exam?
- AWS has added a professional-level Generative AI Developer certification (AIP-C01). It is a separate, much deeper engineering credential — not a replacement for AI Practitioner, despite the similar subject matter.
- How long does the certification last?
- Three years, like other AWS certifications. Recertify by passing the current version, or automatically by earning a higher-level AWS certification.
