How to use this guide
Give each domain study time in proportion to its official weighting. The percentages below are where your marks actually come from. Work through the domains in order, then let your per-domain practice scores show you what to go back to.
The fastest way to improve: read one domain’s focus areas, take a practice run, then read the explanation for every question you missed before moving on. The explanations are where the learning happens. Skipping them is the most common reason people stop improving.
1. Mobile Devices

- Know the accessories and ports, including docking stations versus port replicators and USB-C versus Thunderbolt

2. Networking

- Know the common ports and protocols cold: HTTP/S, SSH, RDP, DNS, DHCP, SMB, SMTP, IMAP
- Identify network hardware: switches, routers, access points, firewalls, PoE injectors, patch panels
- Pick wireless standards, frequencies and channels, and know where long-range fixed wireless fits
- Work through IP addressing: IPv4 versus IPv6, static versus DHCP, APIPA, subnet masks, default gateways
3. Hardware

- Compare storage options: HDD, SSD and NVMe form factors, plus RAID 0/1/5/10 trade-offs
- Know motherboards, CPUs, RAM types and channel configuration, expansion cards and BIOS/UEFI settings
- Size power supplies (wattage, rails, connector types), and know printer hardware and consumables
4. Virtualization and Cloud Computing

5. Hardware and Network Troubleshooting

- Apply the CompTIA troubleshooting methodology in its published order
- Diagnose motherboard, RAM, CPU and power symptoms: POST behaviour, no boot, intermittent shutdown
- Spot storage and RAID failures: clicking drives, SMART warnings, failed arrays
- Fix display and network faults: dim or flickering screens, limited connectivity, intermittent wireless, printer output defects
Common mistakes
- Learning the troubleshooting methodology as a list to recite instead of a sequence to apply. The exam asks what you do NEXT from a specific point in that sequence.
- Skimming the cable and connector material because it looks like rote memorisation. It is heavily tested and easy to score once learned.
- Ignoring printers. They feel dated, but they appear in both hardware and troubleshooting questions.
- Confusing RAID levels under time pressure. Know what each does for redundancy, capacity and performance, not just the numbers.
- Studying against 220-1101 objectives. The V15 weightings changed, so troubleshooting and hardware carry different shares than they did.
Exam-day tips
- Leave the simulations until last if one stalls you. They burn time out of proportion to their count.
- Read for the qualifier. FIRST, NEXT, MOST likely and BEST each point at a different step of the same methodology.
- Eliminate on symptom, not on vocabulary. Two options often name plausible parts, but only one matches the symptom described.
- Never leave a question blank. Scaled scoring means every question counts and there is no penalty for guessing.
- Budget roughly 50 minutes for the multiple-choice bulk, and keep the rest for simulations and review.
How to know you’re ready
