HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate (004)
Terraform Associate is the standard infrastructure-as-code credential, and the 004 revision tests Terraform 1.12. It covers the full working cycle: writing configuration, the plan/apply workflow, modules, state management and collaboration through HCP Terraform. It is a one-hour online-proctored exam. It rewards people who have run Terraform against real infrastructure and had to repair state afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
- What score do I need to pass?
- HashiCorp does not publish a passing score for this exam, and does not publish a question count either. Plan around the 60-minute limit, and treat practice percentages as a readiness signal rather than a threshold.
- Why do the domains here show no percentages?
- Because HashiCorp does not publish weightings. It lists the exam objectives without a percentage split. Rather than invent numbers, we show the objectives as published and distribute our practice questions evenly across them.
- Which Terraform version does the exam test?
- The 004 revision targets Terraform 1.12. That matters, because 004 replaced the retired 003 exam and some older study material still teaches patterns that have since changed. taint has been superseded by -replace, and import and moved blocks are now the idiomatic approach.
- How long is the certification valid?
- Two years from the date you pass. Recertifying means taking the current exam again.
- Do I need to know a specific cloud provider?
- No. The exam is provider-agnostic. Examples may reference AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, but you are being tested on Terraform itself, not on any one provider's services.
