Professional Cloud Architect is Google Cloud's flagship design credential and one of the most-cited cloud certifications in job listings. It tests whether you can take business requirements and turn them into a Google Cloud architecture that is secure, reliable, cost-aware and operable. The scope covers design, provisioning, security and compliance, process optimisation, implementation management, and operational excellence. Design and planning alone is a quarter of the exam.

Who should take it
Cloud architects, senior engineers and technical leads who design systems on Google Cloud rather than only operating them. Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. There are no enforced prerequisites, but the exam assumes real design experience. It asks what you would choose and why, not what a service does.

- How hard is the Professional Cloud Architect exam?
- It is one of the harder cloud certifications, because it tests judgment rather than recall. Most questions present a scenario with competing constraints (cost against availability, speed against governance) and several defensible answers. You have to pick the one that best fits the stated requirements. Memorising service documentation is not enough.
- How long is the exam and how many questions?
- Two hours for 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Google charges US$200 plus tax, and offers the exam in English and Japanese.
- What score do I need to pass?
- Google does not publish a passing score for this exam, and reports results only as pass or fail. With no official percentage to aim at, the practical benchmark is scoring consistently well across full-length, blueprint-weighted practice sets.
- Do I need experience before taking it?
- There are no enforced prerequisites, but Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including at least a year designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. The exam is written for people who have made these trade-offs in production.
- Does it expire?
- Google Cloud Professional certifications are valid for two years. A shorter renewal exam (one hour, 25 questions, US$100) is available to recertify.
