Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer
Associate Cloud Engineer is Google Cloud's hands-on operator certification. It covers standing up projects and billing, choosing and configuring compute, storage and networking, deploying to Compute Engine, GKE, Cloud Run and Cloud Functions, keeping all of it running, and configuring IAM. The exam is written from the console and gcloud outward: it asks what you would actually do, not what a service is for.

Who should take it
Engineers, sysadmins and support staff who deploy and operate workloads on Google Cloud day to day. Google sets no prerequisites but recommends six months or more of hands-on experience, and it shows: the questions assume you have used the console and the gcloud CLI rather than read about them. Digital Leader is the better starting point for anyone who does not touch the platform directly.

Frequently asked questions
- How is this different from Cloud Digital Leader?
- Digital Leader asks what a product is for. Associate Cloud Engineer asks how you would configure it. This one expects console and gcloud familiarity, runs two hours instead of ninety minutes, and is the first Google Cloud exam that assumes you operate the platform.
- What score do I need?
- Google does not publish a passing score and does not return a numeric result. You get a pass or a fail. Treat a practice-exam percentage as a study signal, not a threshold.
- Do I need to know Terraform?
- Yes, at a working level. Infrastructure as code is a named subsection of the deployment domain, which is the heaviest domain at 25%. You are not asked to author complex modules, but you should read a configuration and know what applying it does.
- How long is it valid?
- Three years. Google offers a shorter renewal exam of about twenty questions at a reduced fee, or you can sit the full exam again.
